Any special precautions, if you can suggest. I have asked this question because I live in the city (Delhi, India) which is in high seismic zone and prone to earthquakes.

So what can one do; or what should one do; to protect themselves, others, and property also if an earthquake strikes?

Thanks in advance....

  4. Having spent my lifetime in San Francisco, we were taught as children to stand in a doorway where the structural support is  the strongest.

During the last big quake in 1989 I was in the car driving and I learned another valuable lesson. Look up and see what is above you, get away from any power lines. I pulled my car over to the side of the road and was right next to a gas station and I watched the awnings over the gas pumps crash to the ground. Many people were killed when highway overpasses came down. So if outdoors, the most important thing is to get away from anything that may come down onto you.

As important as what to do during a quake is being prepared for the following days. In '89 we were without power for almost a week. I had always kept an emergency kit in one of the big waterproof garbage cans in the garage. It was always filled with first aid supplies, bottles of water, battery operated flash lights and radio with plenty of extra batteries and non perishable food items. I was so happy to have these things on hand when we really needed them.

This page has a good checklist to use for assembling items to be preapared with and steps to take in case of emergency.

It's a good idea to have all the items together in a container so that if you have to relocate you can grab it and run.
