My fiance and I are writing our own wedding vows. I know what I want to say to him, but I'm not sure how to say it. I have checked several sites and they all give the to have and to hold vows. We are getting married Sept 20th and I'm stuck! Our whole wedding is very non traditional so I don't want them to sound generic. Any advise would be appreciated!!

  1. These were ours -

    I, N., take you, N., to be my wife (husband),

    and promise that in marriage I will love you,

    be true to you and honour you

    and be faithful to you

    all the days of my life:

    so help me God,

    one in the Holy Trinity

    and all the saints.

    -----

    John: There was darkness for a long time and then there was light, and that light was you. Your love has given me wings, and our journey begins today. I pledge before this assembled company to be your husband from this day forward. Let us make of our two lives one life. I want you for today, tomorrow, and forever.

    Mary: I have dreamed my whole life of having someone as wonderful as you love me the way you do. I give myself to you as your wife, and I promise here to treasure for all of my days the love we celebrate today. Let us bring together our lives and find ourselves anew each day.

    ----

    I,_____, take you, _____, to be my_____, and these things I promise you:

    I will be faithful to you and honest with you;

    I will respect, truth, help and care for you;

    I will share my life with you;

    I will forgive you as we have been forgiven;

    and I will try with you better to understand ourselves, the world, and God;

    through the best and the worst of what is to come as long as we live.

    ---

    I, _____, take you,_____, to be my friend, my lover, the (mother/father) of my children and my (husband/wife). I will be yours in times of plenty and in times of want, in times of sickness and in times of health, in times of joy and in times of sorrow, in times of failure and in times of triumph. I promise to cherish and respect you, to care and protect you, to comfort and encourage you, and stay with you, for all eternity.

  2. get a copy of the traditional vows and make them your own...

    eg. i  (name) take you (patner) to be my best friend, my lover, and life companion. i will honour my vows and pledge that i will walk through life with you by my side through all the good, bad and ugly times, in our best of times and when it's a bit more serious than the flu.

    hope this gives you a start!

  3. Why isn't your minister/officiant helping you?

    Are you sure you want to write your vows & not just a personal message from the heart to read after a more modern vow?

    If you want to discuss this further, email me.

  4. I'd say just write what you feel. I know it sounds corny or whatever, but I'd think that if you wrote it out like you were talking to him in person, and exactly how you felt, it'd be good.

    Just picture september 20th rolling around, picture your future together, and how you feel and have felt about him. do it all in some sort of format to where you're not like "I love how you do this. Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that one time..." lol

    Good Luck!
