  1. You shouldn't buy it from a pet store.

You can find one close to you using this website

    http://www.petfinder.com/

or look for a shelter and adopt.

  2. Look for a hamster that is alert, has a shiny coat, and is active.  Any hamster with a matted fur coat or that walks around looking lethargic may be unhealthy.  Make sure the cage you are looking at is clean.  If the cage is dirty that could mean the hamsters weren't taken care of very well.

BTW you can ask if you can pick up the hamster.  That way you can get a good idea of his personality.  However, not all store employees will let you do that because they are afraid of the hamster biting you.  You can ask that they put the hamster in a box first and you can take a look at him that way.

  3. Go at night. This is when the hamsters are most active and the sleepy and slow ones are usually not healthy.

  4. There nocturnal so you wont really know they're personality, but plus they develop one depending on how you treat it. You should pick the biggest one, that looks the most healthy.

  5. Stick your hand in there (or have the store employee do it.) The hamsters that come over to sniff at your hand are generally the less timid, more curious, and therefor more friendly of the bunch.

  6. you should pick it up with a little wash cloth.

  7. just make sure that you like the color and like it and make sure it like you

  8. take him to the vet!

  9. the hamster should be eager to see what woke it up and should sniff around a lot. as soon as you are allowed to get it out, or it is handed to you, look at its eyes. make sure they are bright and clear. also make sure the coat is healthy and clean. don't forget to check and see if it has food in its bowl and water in its bottler. if it is not very curious, not taken care of or anything along those lines, don't buy it. chances are the hamster is sick or has been seriously neglected.

  10. Close your eyes and then stick your hand in and grab

  11. Check for bumps, swollen eyes, or any problems that seem weird. Don't get a hamster that bites a lot. Maybe a couple of times cuz that's what they do but not one that will bite every single person, even the store employees. Its better to choose in the evening when they're most likely awake, so you know what they do. Get one that seems most active and energetic. Have fun with your new hamster.

  12. you can pike them up with your hand but when i do that with my hamster he bites me.so i would get him/her with a hamster tube http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js...
