Question:

How should we file taxes this year?

I got married, bought a house and started a new job all within 8 months of each other. I make 45K/year and she makes 30K, so together we make about 75K. Will it be better for us to file separately or together to take advantage of the standard/mortgage deductions?

Thanks.

  1. It is almost always better to file jointly.  But just run the numbers both ways when the time comes - then you'll know for sure.

  2. Almost always more advantageous to do MFJ than MFS, which are your only choices. . .particularly with a new house

If filing MFS, both must itemize or neither can itemize. . . .

But Jackson Hewitt or Block or Turbotax can check it out both ways so you can see what's best

  3. Fill it out both ways, and file whichever way gives you the bigger refund.
