How should you countdown for a big running race, by days or weeks?

I have 40 days or 5.75 weeks until a big running marathon/race. Should I countdown how many days are left to train or how many weeks are left to train?

  1. It depends on your training program.

    You have a date certain for your race.

    Count backwards and set your training so that you cycle into your race.

    In other words, you want to do  longer, harder work now, and gradually do shorter more intense work closer to the race, allowing a taper toward the end.

    The distance of the race determines how much you taper, if you are running a marathon you should taper for about 2 weeks.

    If you are running a 5K, then 3 or 4 days is enough.
