  1. As a manager, I've chaired and participated on numerous selection panels for vacant positions.  Some general advice is that as the first thing the selection panel sees is your written application, make sure it's succinct, has minimal (clean) formatting, and does not contain any spelling or grammatical mistakes (get someone to proofread it for you).  Keep it to 2-3 pages max.  If there are a lot of applications, it's easy to knock out the people who don't bother to present their resume as a professional piece of written work. You can include information about clubs, hobbies, etc. at the bottom as it makes you appear interesting and shows that you have interests outside work.  In Australia it is not usual practice to send a photo, unless you are doing a long-distance telephone interview (and then it won't be asked for, as we can't take appearance, age, etc. into consideration in recruitment).
