How much do you cut off the roots?

Its a juniper mound miniature tree.

Like all good bonsai questions the first answer is, it depends.  It depends on the health of the particular tree, the soil, the environment, deciduous vs conifer, and the time of year.  With a very healthy tree you can be very aggressive with the root system.  However, there is a proper time of year for each bonsai chore.  

    My advice to you is find a local club or someone who is knowledgeable in your area and ask for face to face advice.  There's nothing like being there in the flesh to ask and answer questions.

  4. A book on the subject might help since there's so many factors based on the plant, pot, etc. and so on. Hard to give a direct answer.
