Question:

How should you signal when making a U-turn in residential areas?

I have my driving test tomorrow and a U-turn might be included.

I was wondering about say, if in a small street, you need to make a U-turn: if there are cars behind you, do you first put your right signal on, pull off, let them pass, then turn your left signal on, make the U-turn, and continue driving? Or, do you simply put the left signal on and go for the U-turn, letting the cars pass as you move out of their way?

Also, if it's a very tight street, how far up a driveway ramp on the sidewalk are you allowed to pull into before going into reverse? I need to know specific details because examiners take off points for the tiniest things. Hope someone can get back to me before tomorrow! Thanks.

  1. U-turns are illegal just make a three point turn instead.....

  2. you don't make a u-turn on a residential street.

pull as far up the drive as needed, if there's any traffic pull far enough up to clear the street.

  3. Pull over and signal that you are pulling over.

Then, signal to the left (as if you are coming out of a parking spot), and whenever you can, make the U turn or 3 point turn.

Note that this is illegal to do when the streets have the double solid lines, and if a cop catches you, you will get a ticket with points for "Improper U-Turn". So be careful.
