How similar are the Portuguese and Spanish languages?

Portuguese is the closest language to Spanish.However their pronounciation is very different. Even if 75% of the words are alike they will not be able to understand each other.I speak Spanish every day and I can understand written Portuguese.

if u know Portuguese, u'll understand spanish, but if u know spanish u will not understand portugese

well, actually 89% of portugues words are related to spanish words.  (just like 89% of italian words are related to french words)  i think a spanish speaker can hear portugues and catch a few words here and there. when they read it, they should understand practically all of it.  and the only reason why a spanish person couldn't understand french is because of the pronunciation, but when they read it, i know a lot of spanish speakers who can understand written french.

they are very similar since both come from latin.

i live here in europe , in spain, and it's really  curious to see how we can understand portugese people without speaking each other's language.

same happens with catalan and italian, but not with french.
