  1. It's harder for me to answer without being able to draw a diagram, but...

The social sciences are divided into several major categories, and sociology is certainly one of them - the others are psychology, history (although this sometimes goes into the humanities), economics, political science, anthropology, etc.

Sociology as a discipline has subspecializations within it - political sociology, economic sociology, social theory, sociology of knowledge, sociology of gender/race/class, social movements, social problems, social work, gerontology, criminology even

Some of these subspecializations have acheived a status greater than the main field - particularly social work - once considered a subfield, an MSW (Master's in Social Work)  is more marketable than a Master's in Sociology

Each discipline contains its own underlying assumptions: psychology's underlying assumption is that the individual is very important, political science posits that power is a ....powerful human driver, anthropology posits that culture is a powerful human driver, and sociology feels that society has a large effect on people's behavior (this is a gross oversimplification, but it works for now)

  2. Sociology is a big part of social sciences. Instead of focusing research on issues within one person like psychology, sociology looks at the effects that outside forces have on an individual, like social structures and social interactions.
