  1. It is called the photoelectric effect. When electromagnetic waves like light meets a metal, it releases electrons that form the electromagnetic energy we call electricity.

    Incidentally, it is the understanding of light and electricity that led to the great discoveries of the past century: Einstein's relativity and Planck's quantum. You see, light can be a wave and a quanta such as a photon.

  3. When light hits a solar panel, it cause the electrons in the solar panel to jump and become excited, and causes an electric current which an flow out of the solar panel.

  4. Well there are several ways to do it...

    One way is to collect the solar energy as heat by using a curved mirror which focuses solar radiation onto a stainless steel pipe filled with water. If your mirror is big enough, and the pipe is small enough, the heat will convert the water into steam which can be used to spin a turbine and a generator which will produce electricity.

    Another way is to use solar panels which have lots of little solar cells on them that convert the sun's radiation into voltage and current. You connect up enough of those cells into panels and connect all the panels together to get DC electricity from the Sun which can charge batteries. Then you use the energy from the batteries just like in a Car.
