My bottom teeth are really crooked and they seem like they need thicker wire to help get them into place. I've only had my braces for about 1 1/2 weeks so maybe I am being a little impatient... but, I was wondering if at my next appointment I might get thicker wires. How soon after your braces were first put on, did you get thicker wire? Also, how many different sizes of wire are typically used throughout the entire treatment time? Thanks =)

  1. Actually the thicker wires are more for stabilizing your teeth. The more flexible wires are to help with rotations, level and aligning of your teeth. Once your teeth are leveled and aligned better you'll get into heavier wires. Be patient. It's well worth the wait.

Typically with in the next two appointments you'll get heavier wires. It all depends on your orthodontist, but usually you'll go thru about 4 wires throughout your 18-24 month treatment.

  2. They changed mine to a thicker wire at the first appt. after I got my braces (so about a month). My orthodontist said there were about 9 or 10 wires total, but not everyone gets all of them, it just depends. Good luck!
