Question:

How soon after importing a car into the Republic of Ireland can I sell it and still avoid VRT tax?

I will be importing for free, as I am a UK resident moving to Ireland. I will reregister the car in Ireland and I will be tax exempt with regard to VRT import tax. I heard however that there is a period of time were I'm not allowed to sell it? Any advice thanks

  1. Hello DM,

I have done exactly the same, moved back to Ireland taking my car with me, imported for free but am unable to sell without the relevant authorisation from the motor tax for a year.  When you get your vehicle registration book it will state this on it.

    Hope this helps.
