Generally the safe amount to drink is considered to be one drink (one shot or one glass of beer or wine) per hour.  So - you should wait two hours after having a shot and a beer before driving.  Eating and drinking non-alcoholic beverages during this time will also help.

This works for me, however, don't take it as fact. A standard drink is 1 beer, 1 glass of wine, or 1 shot.

You can have 2 standard drinks the first hour, and 1 standard drink every hour after that, you'll be ok to drive.

Like I said, don't take it as fact. And if you question yourself being able to drive, then don't, call someone, better safe than sorry.
