Question:

How soon can you renew an MOT?

We are looking to buy a second hand car but it only has till October to run on the MOT. This is the only thing putting me off as I don't want to chance it not getting through the MOT and needing work.

The guy selling it has said he is happy to renew the MOT before we buy it but doesn't think he is allowed because it's not due yet.

Does anyone know (and preferably have links) to show whether you can get it renewed or not?

Thanks in advance

  1. Just tell him to get it MOT'd, it will not be dated on from the expiry of the present certificate unless it is done within 30 days of its expiry. That is not relevant in your case as you wish to ensure it is roadworthy.

  2. 1 month before it's due.

  3. It can be taken in one calender month before the date of expiry to benefit from a 13 month MOT. However an MOT can be done at any time but it will then simply run for the standard 12 months.

  4. You can get a car MOT'd anytime you want.  The one month rule only applies when you want to have the MOT as a continuation of the current one.

  5. you can go for an mot when ever you like but they will only give u max 13 months if the car has an mot

  6. you can get an mot isued 30 days before you mot ends giving you 13 months in total...
