I live in the United States and I want to go to the Love Parade in 2009 in Berlin. How soon every year is it announced with the dates? That way I have time to get a plane ticket over there and find a decent but cheap hotel/hostel. If I wait too long it will be difficult especially finding a hotel. Thanks in advance! Also, anybody want to join me? I want a huge group to go with. Something to tell the grandchildren about :)

  1. I live in Australia and iv been wanting to go to the love parade for years. apparently its in Dortman this year or something. Yeah im thinking of goin 2009 if your intersted in waiting a year. lol!! It will be killer!!

  2. The Love Parade left Berlin - the communists in Berlin never liked this event --- try the Love Parade in Dortmund. This year the official site: http://www.loveparade.de/ More fun than Berlin.

  3. The Love Parade has left Berlin. After several arguments between the organizers and the city of Berlin, they decided to run the event in a different city in the 'Ruhrgebiet' (West-Germany) every year. Last year it was in Essen, this year it is going to be Dortmund.

Check their website for eventual announcements for 2009. As far as I know it is going to be Bochum.

Ah, I found an English article:

After failing to reach an agreement with the city council, it seems the Love Parade organisers have had no choice but to bid a teary farewell to the event's spiritual home Berlin... Yes, that's right folks, the Love Parade has packed it's bags and moved west to the Ruhr district of Germany.

This mighty conurbation of several cities and 5.3 million people is the fifth largest urban area in Europe and should prove an excellent host of the Love Parade. Each year will see the Parade move to a different city within the Ruhr, with Essen taking the honors for 2007, Dortmund for 2008, Bochum for 2009, Duisberg for 2010 and Gelsenkirchen for 2011. As for 2012 who knows... Maybe the Love Parade will make a romantic return to Berlin?

  4. Tell you grandchildren?    Man that's sick.

  5. @Shlomo, i wouldn't say it was the communists who made the Love Parade leave Berlin. To the contrary, it were the capitalists: Cleaning up the mess a million people leave behind is a huge task, even for a huge city, and the Love Parade started (officially) as public political demonstration (which MUST be granted, due to German law), but soon turned into a commercial event, and the city of Berlin asked the organizers to come up with part of the cost of cleaning, who in turn argued that the city of Berlin earned enough money from the visitors, so why should they pay? Stalemate.

So the Love Parade moved to some more tolerant cities, but it will never again be the huge event it was in Berlin in 1999 and 2000, when I was there.

They're trying to re-organize a Berlin Parade every year, but the beautiful days are gone. So, I'm sorry: Nothing more to tell the grandchildren about.
