I live In warrington and the local housing authority using a banding system and then you bid on homes! then they assess our situation and wo ever has more priority gets the place to view and then if they accept they get it!!

I am currently in Band B!

I live with my mum dad and 3 sisters in a 3 bedroom house and am deciding to move out but cant afford to Buy so am renting from the council!

just wondering if anyone has been in this situation and how long it took for you to be housed!

many thanks in advance

Em

  1. Really depends on how many areas you have put - you are only going to qualify for a 1 bedroom property - no doubt a bedsit or flat.

At present, you are more than likely to be deemed as "adequately housed".  I suggest you try housing associations as well or look at any schemes where you might get help for a deposit so you can privately rent.

There is a major shortage of affordable housing in the country and this makes it extremely difficult to get on the ladder, even for social housing.

It could also be worth asking the housing options place on there average waiting times - each authority varies considerably.

  2. Well, you know it is usually a lot easier to get a one bed than a 2-4+ family sized house or flat, if that is any consolation to you.  I'm down in London and I live on an estate with a large proportion of one beds that are considered a bit difficult to let so people normally do not have to wait too long, someone I know got one I think in about a couple of years.  You also might want to consider these less desirable estate type properties when you bid, they are not normally half as bad as they seem once you get settled in.  I noticed another interesting thing the other day, there was a map in the Guardian about the rate of economic growth in different cities in the UK and Warrington came out as growing quite fast in the local area, not so Liverpool which looks quite stagnant now, so you could expect there to be housing initiatives if new jobs are being created.  Probably not a lot of help, but good luck anyway.  If you can find any grounds for them to classify you as in urgent housing need you do not have to bid you know.  Just keep on trying and listening out for anything interesting that is happening in the area, there could be some housing co-operatives forming for example which often like a mix of people, single people as well as families.

  3. I am sorry but I have to say, Thank God I live in America! Renting in otger countries is absurd compared to here!

  4. the system you are talking about is farily new, i am in the same band myself, i suppose it depends on how much you look for a place. you will still need to keep looking about, it wont come falling on your lap. good luck anyway x
