Question:

How strict are DVLA driving regulations?

I have just passed the driving test few weeks back and bought a car.

I would like to know how strict is the monitoring of speed cameras and the rules.

There were certain instances I was driving at 45mph while the speed limit was 40, soon i realized and reduced to 40/below. One more was accidently getting into the bus lane but after a few yards the bus lane finished.

Is there any way I can find out on any endorsements applied to me.(eg. by calling DVLA/etc?) apart from waiting for 2 weeks for the notice to be received.

  1. I tell all my pupils who pass their test, to drive like they did on their test day.  You cannot go wrong.

I've been driving since July 1982, I passed first time and ever since then I've not even had a parking ticket.  I took my advanced driving test in 84, I passed with a class 1.  I've kept my Class 1 ever since, resitting my Advanced Driving test every few years.  I'm now a driving instructor and it annoys me to watch other road users who are not up to a standard trying to drive on our roads.  It should be compulsory that you should be retested every 5 years.

Put it this way, anybody can drive like a total wanker, but it takes the better driver to drive to the standard set out by the d.s.a.

Why don't you just jump red lights, speed down the road, get into the bus lane, and see what happens with you.  You'll lose your licence, you will then have to sit and extended driving test and then try getting insurance for your car..........

  2. Couldn't agree with BSMguy more!

How the heck did you pass your test - a few weeks later and you're already going over the speed limit and driving in the bus lane?!

Now you're either bullsh*tting and trying to wind up the true, safe drivers on the roads or you must just like taking driving tests, as that is what you will end up having to do if you keep driving like a muppet......6 points and a re-test on its way me thinks!!

Oh well, keeps us driving instructors in work!

  3. You seem terribly confused.....you only get endorsements in two ways...you either get a fixed penalty notice through the post...in which case you pay the fixed penalty and get the endorsement....or elect a court case...and if found guilty get the endorsements, or the Police stop you and you either get a summons to court or a fixed penalty notice.

You must be informed within 14 days with a notice of intended prosecution if there is a possibility of being prosecuted...the DVLA have nothing to do with it.

  4. Assume they are very strict - don't take the chance if you are passing cameras.  You can't find out until you are served notice - in the meantime there is no point worrying.

  5. Stick to the speed limit and avoid endorsements. As a new driver you are on probation for the first 2 years. 6 points and you will lose your license. You will also have to re-sit your test to get it back!!

  6. It depends on place to place and not all speed cameras are on line all the time and there are some that allow 1 or 2 miles per hour more then the speed limite where others do not, Its always best to think that they are always on and obley the laws of the road.
