How strict are they with excess baggage charges?

I think the limit is something like 17kg and once I came back from Ibiza my suitcase weighed something like 23kg Im not sure but anyway it was a few kilos over the limit and the check in lady said it didn't matter?

Are charges applied at the discretion of the individual?

  1. with airlines there is no flexibility due to having to add extra fuel to cope with the weight etc all airlines i have ever dealt with are strict and will charge for excess weight

  2. This year i was over the limit both going and coming back and they didn't charge or say anything. I wasn't too much over though so i'm not too sure when they start applying charges.

  3. I think it is okay coming back into the country but gatwick charged me £50 for being over the limit.

  4. very, up to £50 for 5kilo over the limit

  5. Not the best news I know, but since fuel prices rose dramatically, check in clerks have been ordered to be very strict on baggage allowances.  You may get away with 1 kg, but any more and I'm sure you will have to pay extra.

Check in clerk used to have some discretion, especially when the flight wasn't full, but I'm afraid those days have gone.

  6. it hought the limit was 22kg??? check with your tour operator, if they were gonna charge you they wouldve done it there and then not wait weeks then write to you. just be more careful next time u go away

  7. They are really strict now. But you can combine the allowance with other peoples' travelling with you. There is a limit to how much one bag can weigh though.
