How strong of an engine do i need to power a grappling hook?

I am trying to build a electric grappling hook at home and i was wondering how strong of a engine i need. Also what kind of engine is small enough to use and strong enough. Any help will be great.

  1. You have to think of how much of a mechanical advantage the gearbox would provide you.  The greater the advantage the smaller the motor required to move a given weight.  The other consideration is how fast you wish to move the load.  The faster you wish to move it the bigger the motor must be all other things being equal.


  2. It all depends on how much weight you have to pull, and how fast you want to pull it.

    Do you want to pull yourself up the side of buildings?  as fast as you can go, or slowly?

    Do you want to pull cars and trucks out of ditches, mud, and snow?
