    They are an optical illusion caused by light reflected off the INSIDE of raindrops. This reflection also causes a prism effect, so you see color bands.

    But all of this takes place inside your eye.  You cannot touch a rainbow. It always seems to move away from you.

    That's why it is said that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow -- because you can never FIND the end of a rainbow.
