  1. If you are 5'1", he will need to grow about an inch. Or, if his inseam is 27" and yours is 26" give him the bike now. Or, if he is 25 years old (young to me) and to small for the bike, keep telling him he is going to grow up one day and you are saving the bike for him - it's fun to mess with short people, and people who ask how long a piece of string is.

  2. Depends on the size of the frame, and how long his legs are.

  3. There is people who like to ride your bike but do not afford  decent new bicycle . Salvation army or any thrift shop will take care of it so you will do not have junk to store in the garage years to came .............

  4. Assuming you bike is only a few years old it should be a compact frame.

As a rough guide Specialized Sirrus  frame sizes are

    XS - 49cm to fit 5` 0" - 5` 3" (152 - 160 cm)

    S - 51cm to fit 5` 3" - 5` 6" (160 - 168 cm)

    M - 54cm to fit 5` 6" - 5` 9" (168 - 175 cm)

    L - 57cm  to fit 5` 9" - 6` 2" (175 - 188 cm)

    XL - 61cm to fit 6` 3" - 6` 6" (188 - 198 cm)

To take the guess work out of what sized frame you have measure it up against this chart

Seat tube length is from the centre of cranks to the top of the the frame (At the seat post clamp)

He should be right to get onto an extra small now.

He will probably be able to stand over a small as well. Reach to the handle bars is likely to be an issue though. He will need to stretch to reach them. Fitting a shorter stem (the part that joins the handle bars to the fork) will reduce this problem and get him using the bike sooner.

Any larger than a small, then he will need to wait. It is not uncommon for a lad in his early teens to be fitted to a bike that is really a size too big. (Just as a suggestion) A good project for a lad and his uncle could be to swap a frame.

  5. He will have to grow at least until he can straddle the top tube without castrating himself. Frames come in different sizes, and 5 foot tall nephews come in different leg sizes; so the question cannot be answered due the the number of imponderables.

  6. It depends.  A coworker of mine is about 5'2 and she rides a 26" bike just fine.  Although if she meets a red light, she has to bend down because her feet are about an inch and a half above the ground.

I think it's fine and give it to him.
