is it possible to measure a trees height with sun/shade etc.,and no measuring tape.

  1. Sure - its basic math.

    although - if I remember correctly you have to have a building or something close by with a known height to get the equation right.


  2. Well with no measuring tape that gets trickier. You would need to determine the angle of the sun from the base of the tree, then determine the length of the shadow. So if the angle to the sun were 65 degrees, and the shadow was 5 metres, you would use SohCahToa to solve for the height of the tree.

    So the formula would be:

    Tan 65 = x / 5

    65 being the angle from the base of the tree to the sun's position, x being the tree itself, and 5 being the length of the tree in metres.
