I'm thinking of jumping off of one, but I just wanted to know how high it is and if I'll die.

  1. bout 30 feet or so

  2. It varies with the beach and the tide and the weather.

  3. Anywhere from 15-30 feet, depending on the pier. If you've jumped off a 10 meter platform at a swimming pool, you know what it'll be like. Make sure you've got at least 10-15 feet of water to land in.

Time your jump so the waves won't wash you against the pilings, jump out away from the pier for the same reason, and go in feet first. (Pilings tend to be encrusted with barnacles and other sharp stuff, as well as hard enough to hurt if you're bashed against them.)

And make sure you can swim to somewhere you can get out of the water -- a ladder on the pier, a float, or shore. If you're out in the ocean at the end of a 1000 foot pier, it's a long swim to shore.)

  4. Well, it varies from pier to pier - there is no standard pier height.  Additionally, there is the fact that the tide comes in and the tide goes out, so any pier will be closer to the water at high tide than at low tide.  So I guess that if you are going to jump off a pier, it should be at high tide, if at high tide there is lots of water near the pier.
