I want to buy my first bo staff, but I don't know how tall it should be. I'm 16 years old and I'm 5ft 9in tall. I need it for performance and practice. Any recommendations?

  1. most of the time the bo should be as tall as you are or a little taller. in chinese m.a. and others, people use staffs much taller than them for demos and shows of skill.

  2. should stand so that the end is between the top of your ear and the top of your head, just shorter than you are.

  3. ROTFL ... I was going to go there, but thought better of the answer I was going to give .... wink.... wink.

  4. In Chinese Martial Arts, you start out with a staff that's as high as your eyebrows, getting a personalized length staff would be a little pricy though, so get one in the 5'5-5'7 department, I'm not sure about Japanese Martial Arts like Karate, but they aren't too long either.

  5. Bo's should be as tall as you are. A Jo should come to your waist.

Okinawan Bo's are tapered at the ends. I make my own by cutting to size staining or painting and polyurethane coating. If you make your own buy hard wood (Cherry or Oak) not pine.

  6. It's offically just under 6ft but mainly people just call it 6ft.

    Best wishes :)***

  7. Either 5.5 ft. or 6 ft would be good for your height but check with your instructor to see if there is a preference based on what you will be learning in your style and school.

  8. Your bo should be a couple of inches taller than you are. I am in Kyuki-Do, but your instructor might recommend a different height. Good luck!
