  1. I am so impressed with the Montessori school in my area.  I love the whispering by everyone, teachers on down.  In such a quiet atmosphere, a lot of learning can occur.

I found most of these responses interesting.  May I just say, the word isn't "compliment", it is "complement".  Sorry, mistakes like this don't always bother me, but for some reason, this one did.  Sorry.  I love the advice you all gave!

  2. One thing good about montessori materials is that they are self-correcting. So even without the teacher's guidance, the children can learn lessons on their own.

  3. Maria Montessori intended that the child's senses be refined by the materials. For example, there are materials that help children discriminate between hot, warm, and cold; heavy and light; small and large; and color gradations.

Children enter preschool already "knowing" about these concepts through everyday experience, but the Montessori materials allow the child to further explore and improve their knowledge. The materials are all hands-on, which means that the child is learning by actual experience rather than being told something by a teacher or reading it in a book or textbook.

  4. If I understand your question correctly , Montessori lets chidren explore according to what they want to learn at that time or at least in what way.  It can add creativity etc.  Depends on the child and the school.  If a child goes from a lot of Montessori preschool and then into public school, it can be a very hard transtion.

  5. Wendy b states:

" If a child goes from a lot of Montessori preschool and then into public school, it can be a very hard transtion. "

The above statement is a prevalent urban legend. In reality, nothing can be further from the truth. All research states that children who attend Montessori preschools are ahead of their peers both socially and academically. The only problem they have is being placed in an environment where their interests and creativity are stifled, such as when one of my students moved to an area where Montessori wasn’t available and so was placed in a traditional classroom.  On her first day of school, she found a bunch of dittos on her desk and did them all perfectly without being told, much to the dismay of her teacher who felt that she was insubordinate for not waiting to be told when and how to do the work.

As far as the original question:  The materials compliment learning because they are designed to be used in many ways. To begin with, they are designed to spark the imagination and desire to learn for many different types of learners.  For visual and artistic learners, they are colorful.  For kinesthetic learners they are designed to be touched and moved. For logical learners they present the concepts in clear and logical terms. All the materials set a foundation for learning that can be revisited as the child’s questions advance and the materials used to set the stage and teach the new topic.

Additionally, all the materials are designed to be self correcting so that the children can learn from them directly, and each material eventually leads the child to abstraction. (Understanding the concept and being able to apply it to a variety of situations, as opposed to memorizing a series of steps or procedures and then being lost or confused when a problem is presented to you in a way that is different then you were taught..)
