How the constructors’ table of the 2011 Formula 1 season stands after five rounds?
5 of the 19 scheduled races of the 2011 Formula 1 season are over with and the constructors’ table has started to show a real picture of the points and pace of the F1 teams.
So far, the Red Bull team has dominated the table with 185 points having a clear lead of 47 points over the second running team, McLaren-Mercedes.
Although the pattern of points is expected to change a little bit in the upcoming races, still such a lead of Red Bull means that at least for the next few races they can breathe easy.
Coming from the pre-season testing sessions in Spain, Red Bull were expected to lead the table, which they did. Apart from Red Bull, a few unexpected championship contenders rose to the occasion and are now becoming a serious threat to the monotony of the
Formula 1 game.
Firstly, right behind the Red Bull team is the McLaren-Mercedes team with 138 points. The British team was slightly on the back foot in the pre-season testing and no one expected any serious challenge from them.
With one race win and five podium landings, McLaren established a strong footing on the constructors’ table which will see them through for a greater challenge as the 2011 season reaches its summit.
Behind McLaren, the pattern is somewhat expected but the points difference is a little bit higher. Ferrari follow in third place mainly because of the fact that the start of the season was not as electrifying as was expected from them.
Ferrari had some mediocre finishes from their drivers which gave them a total of 75 points in five races. Ferrari have only managed one podium place which came from Fernando Alonso at the Turkish Grand Prix.
After Ferrari, the constructors’ table has a surprise. The Renault GP team has taken a huge step forward in their development which allows them to sit comfortably in the fourth position.
Renault’s season started with two back-to-back third place finishes in the Australian Grand Prix and Malaysian Grand Prix. After that, when some of the higher ranked teams stepped in, Renault slipped from the points table and currently have 46 points on
the table.
The Mercedes team sits fifth on the table with 40 points most of which came from Nico Rosberg’s efforts. Mercedes’ second driver, Michael Schumacher, is still struggling to get a grip on his MGP-W02.
The second surprise of the 2011 constructors’ table comes in the midfield where the Sauber Ferrari team has taken the advantage and has scored 11 points for their sixth place.
Toro Rosso and Force India are seventh and eighth respectively which was more or less expected before the season began.
A lot was expected from the Williams team and it was predicted that they will strive for the top five positions in the midfield. However, against all expectations, Williams have failed to score a single point in the opening five races of the season.
At the tail of the constructors’ table are the teams which were expected to be there. Lotus-Renault, Virgin-Cosworth and HRT-Cosworth complete the table with no point on the board.
Will the season continue like this? With 14 races of the 2011 Formula 1 season still remaining, it does not look likely. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
