Question:

How the h**l did they create Stonehenge?

These rocks weigh TONS... and are arranged perfectly. How the h**l would it be possible for the people (whoever they were) of that time (whenever it was) to construct such a magnificent site? I would assume that human strength on its own would be unable to move these massive objects.

Obviously no one knows for sure, but what are the more popular theories regarding this?

  1. Hammer Hammer s***w Driver Drill Coffee Break Repeat 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000... Times

  2. Have u ever been?? i did and i think they rolled them up the hill on logs then used pulleys to stand them up. if u have not been go. its very eerie but very peaceful and beautiful at the same time. Its amazing to think what people can do when they put there minds to it.

  3. Rafts or similar craft on the rivers, then log rollers overland. Possibly the stones could have been dragged by  oxen,or even in winter on sleds. the holes they were put in were all made different depths so that the stones, which of course were not exactly the same height, would be uniform. the lintels were probably put on using wooden scaffolding to raise them one level at a time (the Stonehenge people were also skilled woodworkers and that's one of the things that makes the monument different that other stone circles-'it's essentially woodworking in stone!

It's unlikely slaves were used in construction-the population of Britain was not that high at the time and it's unlikely anyone would have hundreds of slaves (for they would then need hundreds of warriors to keep them subdued). It is more likely to have been the effort of several communities. certainly people, including foreigners, were coming to salisbury Plain to visit 'something' at that time--bronze age skeletons have been found that belonged to people from Switzerland, Brittany and Wales.

One poster mentioned something about the Romans. There is no evidence they dismantled it (why bother? it was already abandoned & falling into ruins long before they came to Britain), and they never mentioned it in any of their written documents either. Local,Romanized Britons still came though, in small number, maybe remembering a bit of what it had once been--the first tourists on the site.

  4. I'm guessing they used ropes and pulleys to make it easier to move the rocks. I want to go there someday!

  5. Probably the same way as they built the Pyramids, lots of hard work from lots of slaves.

  6. National Geographic

  7. If you have the national geographic channel they just had a show on there called stonehenge decoded. If not search their website. Basically they used ropes and round logs to roll the stones to the site (over 25mi) Then they used a series of pulleys and things to get the stones in place. At least this is what the archaeologists theorize.

  8. Stonehenge was created by aliens, but because of another government conspiracy it's been covered up!

  9. The top pieces were probably put in place by creating a hill up to the top of the uprights, then rolling the stone up with logs and rope. Once the top pieces were in, they dug away the dirt.

Edit: That definitely deserves a star because it's actually interesting, a rarity in these parts.

  10. I blame the goverment

  11. Apparently, they cut down hundreds of trees, stripped them bare, and rolled the fantastically large and heavy stones, which they had cut perfectly from a quarry in Wales, with bare hands and prehistoric axes no doubt, over hills and through marshes, to the site, where they pulled them up straight and aligned them, perfectly, with the sun's rise on a particular date each year.  The site was actually much larger than it is today, but the Romans destroyed most of it.  That's the story that officialdom will tell you, and they are sticking to it.  Or perhaps you could believe that there was an advanced society on this planet before us, a long time before us, which built it and was destroyed.  I find the second hypothesis far more believable.

  12. with a lot of hard work

  13. I Have Heard That This Is Natural.

  14. lots of slaves did the work, like the pyramids. Aliens are another less believable theory.

  15. People were a lot smarter and more capable than moderns generally give them credit for.

  16. No Idea.

  17. they used their brains

  18. Stones of these size can be moved using rollers, horses or manpower: ancient man was just as smart as modern man.

The cap stones would have placed by burying the upright stones in a shallow sloped mound, dragging the cap stone up the mound then removing the dirt.

As for their arrangement, I read a book a while ago that demonstrated the creation of the Stonehenge arrangement using celestial observations for a year. It would have taken longer to build the structure than to collect the information for their placement.

It is most likely that the stones were a more permanent update of an earlier (stone cairns or wooden poles) observatory.

  19. i can only imagine they put the rocks onto large wooden rollers & used massive man power & rope to pull them...but i am guessing!

i just have to say though...Stonehenge is the most boring place i have ever been to in my life...it is just lifeless & dull...i'd rather watch grass grow than ever return there!!

  20. one stone at a time

  21. They used rope and round logs to pull them on, making the stones slightly easier to transport.
