  1. um yeah giving your hamster a bath is like the death sentence for the poor thing they clean themselves

don't worry she'll run in her wheel eventually my hamsters runs in his wheel occasionally, but i make sure to get him out for real exercise like running around in a little pen type thing

  2. Don't bathe your hamster in water unless they are saturated in something toxic. A sand bath is best. Hamsters love to clean themselves. It's part of their daily routine. Your hamster should not stop running on its wheel. This could be a sign of illness. If you notice lack of energy, difficulty breathing, foul odors, nasal or optical discharge, etc., make sure to see a vet who is qualified to treat exotic pets immediately.

  3. Hi!

1.You should NEVER bath your hamster. If you do so you will alter their skin protection.

In the dessert, they do not have baths but they have sand bath. I recommend you do the same.

Put in your hamster cage a small ceramic bowl half full with Chinchilla sand or normal sand. The hamster will clean by himself and will play in it also. You should try to teach him to use the sand bowl as a litter too. I did the same with my dwarfs and now the cage is much more cleaner and healthier to them too.

Here is how I do it:

I change the sand every morning and my hamsters first use it for bathing ant for the rest of the day they use it as a toilet.

If your hamster is really dirty or he absolutely needs a bath it's more safer to use a bottle from the spray you use it to clean the windows (or else=D). Put some water in the bottle and gently spray your hamster. After this wipe him with a towel or some napkins. Make sure that the room temperature is just right so the hamster's doesn't catch a cold.

    2. If your hamster doesn't use his wheel any more it could be because:

-he has a foot injury from the wheel

-the wheel is too small- you can tell this if your hamster's spine is too curved when he runs in the wheel

-the wheel isn't suited for him: it has small bars and the hamster can not run on them -he slips

    -the wheel isn't well put

I hope your hamster will get over the problem and use the wheel again.

  4. My hammies love rolling around in chinchilla sand, which i put in for a day once a week. Although it isn't neccessary at all.

If your hammie needs a clean, put a shallow dish of chinchilla SAND, NOT DUST... as dust can cause them to breathe in some of the lighter stuff causing irritation to the lungs and even eyes....

Don't put them water for the reasons everyone else has explained x*x

  5. ABSOLUTLY NO WATER!!!!! they need dust baths. water completely stresses them out if they're not drinking it! you need a powder/sand bath for them. that means they CANNOT swim. you cant make ur little girl use her wheel, he will use it when she figures that that is something fun to do @ night.

  6. NOOOO

never give a hamster a bath they don't like it at all

there like cats except they can die because there fur will become cold after its out of the water and they can get pneumonia and stuff like that so please dont give your poor hamster a bath i beg you =]

and she probs got bored of her wheel all my hamsters have done that too

they do need exercise though so i would recommend a hamster ball just keep her in that every night or so for at the most 20 minutes

if she doesnt like that just let her loose in a room but keep an eye on her hamsters seem to be very good at escaping but only do this if she trusts you enough cos she might not let you pick her up.

oh yer and make sure that if you do let her run around in a room make sure theres no other animals in there with her

hamsters arent very good at defending themselves

    have fun xx

  7. Hamsters don't need baths, they don't like water and can't swim. Plus he is likely to get a cold and die. Afters clean themselves or you can buy them chincilla sand and they will roll around in that. And maybe the wheel is too small or hurting her feet, you should aim to get the biggest wheel possible and one that has no gaps in it, there feet are v small and may get trapped!

  8. you dont give hamsters a bath...they will wash/groom themselves. i have no idea if they can swim, but im pretty curious about it too...she might not use the wheel because she finds it boring or she could prefer to run around her cage/play with you instead. if your worried take her to the vet =]

  9. plz tell me your joking! don't give your hamster a bath...

  10. I once gave a speech in grade school about giving a hamster/rat a bath lol.

I personally would always use a bathroom sink but I made sure to wash it out before I did anything.  then I would add luke warm water ( I didn't fill the sink or anything I just put enough so that my hamsters belly would touch the water).

Then I would use shampoo (something like an infants shampoo that wouldnt burn its eyes just in case) and would apply just the tiniest bit of shampoo, rub it in and then rinse it out.  All the while I would be holding my hamster with one hand just in case to make sure she couldn't harm herself.  Also while apply shampoo I would avoid the hamsters head, just because I didn't think it would appreciate a bunch of shampoo in its eyes and mouth and I did not want to poison it etc.

After I was done rinsing the hamster with the luke warm water I would take a washcloth and hold the hamster in it until it was dry or for the most part dry, so it woulnt catch a cold or anything.

Also I would recommend only giving your hamster a bath when it absolutely needs one ex: if a bunch of fecal matter is stuck to its coat etc..

And that is how I used to bathe my hamsters and rats.

  11. You shouldn't have to wash your hamster, they do that themselves. Besides, putting them in water could lead to wet tail, which could kill. If you insist on giving it a bath, get a warm, damp wash cloth that has been soaking in soapy water, make sure you ring it out really well, and gently massage your hamster with it. As for the wheel, idk. Maybe you should get an exercise ball where it can rome about the house, and still get it's exercise. You may want to tape the top on though. They sometimes pop off.

  12. Bathing removes natural and essential oils from the hamster’s coat, which can cause the hamster to catch a chill and die.

Bathing should only be done in exceptional circumstances, like if your hamster has paint, varnish or anything toxic on its coat that may harm it if it licks itself or ingests it. The hamster will clean itself if it is dirty and the substance is not toxic. Chinchilla sand will keep the coat clean and grease free. Normally there should be no need to bathe your hamster with water at all during the course of its life.

  13. You dont need it soo deep. Get a cereal bowl or something. Put a small towl underneath so he wont get freaked out about the floor. Make sure the room temperature it warm. And dont put a lot of water.

  14. From what I have heard you don't need to give them a bath, unless of course they are long haired, because they usually wash themselves constantly.

And I am not quite sure why your hamster wont use the running wheel, mine have never had that problem but they are also nocturnal so maybe it does while everyone in the house is sleeping. But if your worried about it you could always ask at a vets or at a pet store, or I suppose you could try to handle it more to ensure it still gets some exercise.

  15. Well, it cant be above the feet, and you need to get some of that speacial shampoo from the petstore you got her at.  About the warm water, it cant be to cold, but not hot. It needs to be colder than what you shower in most likely, but you still need to ask someone who works at a petstore in that section.  You should only bathe them for around 5 minutes, and dont get ANY water an there face, just a tad on there back.  And you DO dry off your hamster afterwords.  As your hamster get older, it becomes less active, and wont run on the wheel as much.  To get her/him active again, you need to play with it, but not to ruff.  He/she will aventuly start back on its wheel, but not as much as it used to.
