Do you have dial up or DSL access connected to your phone?  If so, there's a few things you need to check to make sure you actually are connected.  Check the modem, make sure it's on and the monitor, check the wiring's make sure they are all firmly connected, make sure everything is plugged in.

I don't know who your carrier is so I can't really help you to much then that.
