How the process of plastic from coal?

I want to know how coal can be a plastic in detail if possible.

  1. As far as I am aware. the feedstock (chemicals which go "into the mix" when making a product) for the plastic will be an extract of "coal tar".

    You heat the coal up (without air!) to make coke by a process known as pyrolysis. The vapours given off during this are then (condensed?) and fed to a fractional distillation plant, which separates the liquid/gases into different fractions. Any heavier fractions may be cracked to turn them into "interesting" lighter fractions. Reforming takes light fractions, combines them to make ones which are heavier.

    After that lot it's more of less the same, as if the fractions had originally come from oil.
