    Water molecules somehow manage to stick together.

    The ship is pushing down on the surface of the water, with a force that is equal to the weight of the ship.

    The surface of the water is pushing up on the ship, with a force that is equal to the weight of the water that is displaced.

    When the ship gets deep enough in the water, to where it displaces the amount of water that weighs the same as the ship, it will stop sinking, and float at that depth.
