As far as I can remember, In respiration (the presence of O2), cells undergo aerobic glycolysis where the end products are pyruvate +2 ATP + 2 NADH. however, the 2 ATP molecules are compensating those used before in the energy investing phase of glycolysis; thus the net production of ATP from glycolysis is 0. Now each NADH will enter the ETC(electron transport chain) releasing 3 ATP=6 ATP from both. while the Pyruvate will enter the TCA cycle producing 32 ATP.

    so the net production of ATP=38 but the total is 40
