  1. The shadow can't tell the time, but you can by looking at the tree shadow.

    It works like a sundial.  (but less cleanly, because the shadow of the trunk may be obscured by the leaves and branches).  You can use rocks to place on the "hours".  The shadow will stretch toward the west in the morning, and then (depending on the time of year) either disappear entirely at "high noon" (which isn't exactly noon- especially if your area works with daylight savings time) or will point north a bit.  Then in the afternoon, the shadow point more towards the east.  As it moves around the circle, you can put hour markers, and then tell time by seeing which hour marker the shadow points to.
