  1. keeps valves opening/closing at correct times...

  2. they work by turning the camshaft in relation to the crankshaft so that the valves open and close at the correct time and don't come in contact with the pistons..

  3. you see, the car has intake valves and exhaust valves, these open and close depending on where the piston is while in operation, and the pistons then turn the crankshaft which give you power to turn your wheels.

so knowing this, there are 4 strokes in modern engines, intake, compression, power and exhaust.

during intake u want the intake valve open and the piston traveling down so it can breathe in gas and air, then compression which will squish everything giving off a bigger bang, then the spark plug fires and ignites the air fuel mix, then in the exhaust the exhaust valve opens and lets the used air out because it cant be burnt again. so in order to keep this from going all out of order the crankshaft has a mark which points to another mark and when it aligns it means that the number one piston is at the begining of its intake stroke, so the timing belt is aligned a certain way

say if u were to be puttin on a new belt, youd align the crankshaft to be  at the first cylinder on its intake stroke, then u adjust the camshaft to be at the same place, then you put on the belt, which then allows it to be perfectly syncronized, when the crankshaft turns faster the belt allows the camshaft to turn just as fast

  4. The timing belt or chain is what keeps the pistons and valves in sync.  It is the link between the crankshaft (which moves the pistons up and down) and the camshaft (which controls the valves)
