Question:

How to Be Prepared for Pets on Rainy Days?

Where I live, it rains a lot. Including right now. My dog was outside doing his business and wanted to come right back in. I opened the door and let him in. I got soaked in water! As I went to go get a towel, I slipped and fell! I will be forced to take him for a walk later...in the rain. I'm sure I'll be soaked again. I need to be able to get a towel and be able to dry off without slipping and falling. I need a way to prepare for weather like this. Should I put a small curtain rod up on the door? How do I know what type of curtain rod would be appropriate for my door? Should the rod be placed above or below the doorknob? I plan on hanging a towel there on the curtain rod on the door so that I don't slip and fall trying to get a towel. Also, so I can throw the towel over my dog before he shakes all over me. Is this a good idea?

  1. yes you can put a curtain rod on your door , I think the round kind would look better BUT you couldn't yank the towel off hard, see where it would be easier for you to grab  above the k**b or below the k**b when your dog comes in .  or you can get a small round stool and put it by your door and lay the towel there. or take the towel with you when you leave the dog in and pick him/her up wrapping the towel around the dog to keep from getting wet. yes you can throw a towel over your dog BUT be careful not to frighten your dog by the towel being thrown over it.

  2. Mount a sturdy TOWEL RACK on the door BELOW the level of the door k**b but high enough for a large bath towel to clear the floor when folded over it.  When you open the door to let your dog back in, grab the towel off the rack and wrap the dog immediately in it to absorb as much of the water as possible before he/she starts shaking it off.

If you can afford it, and it's possible for it to be done, it would be very nice for you to have an overhead roof shelter over your door.

  3. Yes.

  4. Um......

Just make sure you get a towel BEFORE you let your dog out. That way you have the towel ready for when he wants to come into the house. I'd leave the rod in the bathroom where it belongs. If you really want a towel holder of some sort, make it a drawer cabinet so it can be hidden and not be out there looking so weird in a weird place.

It takes one minute to go get a towel before opening the door, so don't see the problem there. You see or hear the rain, know you need to get a towel.

As for a walk in the rain... get a cheap treadmil and teach your dog to walk on it in the rain. He gets exercise and you all stay dry.

  5. Why not put a towel hook next to the door.  It will be less noticeable than a shower rod and you won't have to step over it when you need to go outside.  Also put a slip proof, rubber backed rug in front of the door so that it doesn't make the floor wet and slippery.

If you can catch you dog before he shakes all over your that would be ideal.  When you take your walk, use an umbrella.
