How to Best Spend 8 Days in Italy?

Hi! I am going to Italy for 8 days in March and would appreciate any input on what I need to do to get the most out of 8 days: what to see, where to eat, where to stay, etc. My sister is studying in Florence -the main reason I'm going- so I will be there for at least 3 of the days. Other than that its up to my planning and I have never even been to Europe so I don't quite know where to start... any help would be very much appreciated!!

  1. See the colliseum, the leaning tower of pisa, go in one of those really cool boats, and eat a lot.

  2. Hi, since you only have 8 days, with the 3 days in Florence I would visit also Pisa. Then you could go to Rome for at least a couple of days, and you could go to Capri, which is GORGEOUS. If you don't want to go that south, you could go from Florence to Venice and then to Rome. I think you should see Venice, it's so unique. So, 3 days in Florence, 2 in Venice, 2 in Rome and the next day should be your departure day. This is just a suggestion. Once you decide your route feel free to e-mail me for more advice. I'm Italian, born and raised in Rome. Although I live in the US now, I still have many contacts there and I've organized trips for other people before!

  3. I'm going to Italy in April for 8 days - here's what my plans are so far:

Flying into Rome, spending 3 days there sightseeing.  Vatican City, with the Sistine Chapel, I've heard should take most of a day, and then I'll probably spend another visiting some of the famous ruins, like the Roman catacombs, the Parthenon and the Coliseum. I think I'm going to take an Enjoy Rome tour for the ruins, since they'd streamline the process and aren't too expensive - www.enjoyrome.com.

Taking the train to Florence, spending 3 days there, one of which I think I'll be doing a day tour of Tuscany - www.tuscantrails.com is the best deal I've found so far.  The rest of the time I'll probably check out some of the architecture and major historical artwork that can be found there - but your sister will know a lot more about what can be found in Florence!

Take the train to Venice, spending 2 days there.  My big highlights there will of course be the expensive and touristy but necessary gondola ride and wandering around next to the canals.

Both tour companies, Tuscan Trails and Enjoy Rome, have gotten good reviews on www.tripadvisor.com by users.

I just bought the 2008 Rick Steeves Italy guide and have found it very helpful.  Check it out!
