Question:

How to Buy a Bird Stand?

I recently took in a Great Billed Parrot that was being neglected by someone I know. I am now wanting to buy a bird stand (not sure if that's what it's called). I'm talking about the stand that you can put a parrot on so that they can be out of their cage. Is there any specific type that I should get? Should it have food and water cups? What about toys? Any advice is appreciated.

  1. That kind of stand is called a perch, no matter how small or how large. Some are large and complicated with many perches, wheels, ladders, places to hang toys. Some are small, table top or fit on top of the cage, etc. My wheeled perch for my Grey is twice as big as his cage!

It all depends upon the size of your bird (and I don't know about great billed parrots). It also depends upon how often you will be using it and how he behaves when he is out of his cage. If he acts up, perches can be a problem, so you won't use it as often. For my bird, perch time is playtime, about one hour a day. Altho i put food and water in the dishes, he never touches it, just plays with his toys and runs up and down the ladders and rails. Your parrot will probably enjoy it, too!

  2. as far as the little play stand designs go, there aren't any rules to follow!  You simply consider what setup might look more fun for your bird.

Most stands do come with food and water cups.  These are great for giving little treats during the day, but are not completely neccessary.
