Question:

How to Buy a Finch Cage?

A friend of mine is wanting to buy some finches as pets. She is confused about which cage would be best. How big does it need to be? How many finches should be housed together? What about bar spacing? What accessories are needed? Any advice is appreciated. She doesn't have internet access and I really don't know much about finches. Thanks in advance. I will pass on any information to her!

  1. depending on how many your friend is planing to by but if you get a canary cage that would hold two finches quite happily as they need to spread there wings and a couple of perches each at a different level and a water and seed bottle/troffs you can also buy the fruit /gran bars for them 2eat.sand paper for the base of the cage i found that a small bowl of fine sand in the bottom they like to sand bath or a shallow bird bath on the cages entrance i hope this helps

  2. since finches are flight birds, she should look for as big a cage as she can afford to make sure they have plenty of room to flutter around comfortably.  I don't know the exact numbers on bar spacing, but since finches are so small, they would do best with bars that are very close together, so close your finger can just barely fit through.  The bars should not be thick like in parrot  cages, but rather small wires.

Accessories would be things like twig perches for them to perch on, millet seed, and cuttlebone!  Cuttlebone should be kept in the cage 24/7, as it is a good source of minerals and calcium, and is very important for caged birds to have.  Most feeds don't include that kind of nutrition.

Hope I helped!  You can get on petsmart.com, too, to help give her ideas on things to get.
