How to Dirt Jump on a Mountain Bike?

How do you jump your Mountain Bike on dirt jumps or any jump in general? I am a bit of a noob in this area and can only do small jumps but then again i have a pretty lousy bike. Any specific tips on how to jump a mountain bike?

I started off with a ramp, i went up with no pain, my writst hurt though from the jolt. A block from my house is a dirt field, i had fun doing sojumping up ramps, no mastermind needed, its just, if you plan to go downhill a just assume you won't hit a rock and fly in the air for 10 sec then fall face first, you'll need to know a little when it comes to steep downhill slopes.
