How to?..Hooking up Room A/C unit to Backup Generator?

I will only need to do this doing power outages...My room a/c unit has a 30amp 250 volt plug. The portable generator that I have is a Briggs and Stratton 4000 watt, model 30320 (on the Home Depot web site). I do not want to hook this up to my main electrical box. What type of adapter or setup do I need to connect the plug from the room a/c unit to one of the outlets on the generator? Is this even possible, because those outlets on the generator are only 120v? I am thinking this is not possible. Thanks.

  1. If you do not have a 220 outlet on the generator you have answered your own question. If you change generators shop for one that will for sure start up your ac. Just because it is 220 does not mean a generator will handle the startup load of the ac. If you can lookup or inquire on the 'surge watts' required for startup on the ac and the running wattage then take this and shop for a generator. Hope this helps.
