How to I know if my pool table is slate or wood?

DF said it best. Look underneath the table and you will be able to see the bottom side of the top surface. Slate will be a dark gray or almost black.

Wood, usually 1" particle board, will look like, well, particle board.

From underneath the table you can poke the bottom side of the surface with an ice pick. It is probably slate if you cannot make a penetration and it is probably some sort of wood if you can.

It will be very heavy if its slate.

Tap it & it should feel solid like stone if its slate.

Slate is layers of rock.

I would tap it with something metal.  You should be able to tell by the sound it makes whether it is Slate or not.  

Another way?  was it cheap???
