  1. At some point you will welcome the cold water - especially during runs.  Running on soft sand is h**l on the knees, and after a few miles you begin to pray that they send you into the surf to numb your legs up.

BUD/s was not just started yesterday.  The instructors watch the water temperature regularly and have charts that tell them how long they can keep you in before you become hypothermic.  So physically it is not a problem.  Mentally - cold water sucks!

Stay in cold water long enough, and your core temperature will drop a degree or two every time you look at a glass of ice water.  There is no way to prepare for it.  It is all about guts and balls.

  2. i don't think you really can i think no matter what you do it will end up being a do you really want to do this battle in your head. alot of people who quit BUDs dont quit because they are unable alot let their mind overwhel them with bad thoughts and alot just accect that this lifestyle is not for them.

  3. Man, well every SEAL I know and have meet, I have asked them this if we ever talked about their training and they all said the same thing: you just can't prepare it before, even if you go in summer.

But check this out...I am no expert of course and a real SEAL would be the best. Here is a link with the experts to answer your question and guide on the best way to prep. YOU NEED TO TALK SEALS! You might hear anything on YA lol.

Q: Can I talk with a SEAL or SWCC?

A: If you have a particular question not covered here, please call 1-888-USN-SEAL between the hours of 0700 to 1600 (PST) Monday through Friday. There are also NSW/NSO mentors in each geographic region of the US. Your local Navy recruiting office can direct you to him.

Q: Can you recommend a pre-SEAL or SWCC workout regiment?

A: We cannot legally endorse any workout regiments, but there is a large amount of literature available on the internet and in bookstores. Being comfortable in the water is very important. Workouts that involve the whole body are ideal.

For any additional information on questions not answered, please call:

Good luck and I would just call and ask a SEAL, read some good books on BUDs and SEALs (there are dozens of 1st persons accounts from Vietnam to now) and get the facts brotha. Get that Trident!

  4. It's all mind over matter. I know it sounds cliche, but it's the truth. You have to get mentally ready, the body will follow. Don't let your mind kick your butt. It's gonna SUCK, but it's what you wanted and hey, gotta end sometime.

Now go, and don't look back.

  5. Cold? Its in San Diego. Jeez, there are hotels out there.

Remember this: people have passed it.

As Yoda said, Do or Do Not. There is no Try.

Look, do this: Get a SEALS tattoo. Go to the bars where the SEALS hang out. Say you're a SEAL. Get your a$$ kicked (this really happened, never underestimate the stupidity of some in the Naval Service).

You realize you should be spending your time lifting telephone poles, doing pushups, and not asking stupid questions on the Internet don't you? Oh yeah, run. Eat cold food, run some more. Note there is no mention of sleep in this.
