Question:

How to I train my kitten to stop clawing me?

He always bites and scratches my feet and he'll claw his way up my legs and back to get to my shoulder or to get up on the kitchen counter. He's not a mean cat, he just doesn't know better, but I need him to stop. Today he climbed up my leg while I was cooking eggs. It's becoming dangerous when I'm in the kitchen.

Is there any way to make him stop this behavior?

  1. Squirt bottle or just a can of air.. or you can blow on him with your mouth. I always train my foster kittens and my cats not to bite or claw by blowing in their face when they do. You could use a can of air to get the job done as long as you make sure to hold it far away so that it doesn't freeze their nose! Squirt bottles filled with water work too but I find it's easier to just make a PSSST! sound and then blow in their face.

  2. get a squirt bottle adjust it to straight stream and squirt it whenever it does it. At the same time hiss  so it relates the water to the hiss very soon just the hiss will work.

  3. It may be too late if he has been doing this for a long time.  Keep a rolled up newspaper with you (not a whole newspaper just a few sheets rolled up and secured with a rubber band or tape.  When he does something that you do not want him to do.. say loudly STOP

and hit him (lightly) with the newspaper..you have to be consistent and do this every time until he stops doing it.  The objective is not to hurt him..just hitting and the noise and the "stop"  just say stop once loudly and follow as quickly as you can with a swat.  Kittens can be trained this way easily but grown cats are much more difficult.

After a few minutes do some petting and maybe a treat so he knows you are not still "angry".  Tip about treats... most small packages of kittie treats are way overpriced and have many bad things for cats..

like candy for children.  Have a small bag of premium dry cat food and use it as a treat.  As long as it is different from his regular food he will still think of it as a treat and you can treat him often without disrupting his diet.  good luck
