    How to Make Potato Salad

    STEVE HIMMER

    1. Decide to make potato salad.

    2. Boil 8-10 red potatoes and 6 eggs in heavily salted water. Remember that the first chef you worked under taught you to salt egg-boiling water because the salt breaks down membranes between shell and meat, making the egg easier to peel later on. Decide that was the best job you've ever had.

    3. While eggs and potatoes boil, think about doing some writing. Remember that the restaurant was named after a prostitute character in a novel you've never read. Laugh about that. Decide to read the novel, and mean it this time. Remember mixing potato salad in plastic garbage pails, with your arms up to the elbows in mayonnaise and balsamic vinegar. Realize you'd never heard of balsamic vinegar before learning to make potato salad according to your first chef's recipe.

    4. Dice half of a red onion and sautée it in olive oil. Add 4 cloves of minced garlic. Note that cooking the onions is not part of chef's recipe. While getting garlic from the refrigerator, notice most of a sixpack. Wonder if it's too early to start drinking yet. Imagine what Miss Manners would say:

    Dear Miss Manners,

At what time is it appropriate for one to open the first beer of the day?

    Signed, Thirsty

    Dear Thirsty,

There's no one specific time that is appropriate, and there are certain times of year at which drinking earlier is more acceptable. But if you find yourself struggling to resist the "first beer of the day," you might consider trying not drink it at all. Alcohol should be a rel ... wait, what are ... you couldn't even wait until I finished answering? How crass!

Decide that Miss Manners is a fuddy duddy. Wonder if you've ever called anyone "fuddy duddy" before, and if that means you're becoming one, too.

    5. Remove potatoes and eggs from heat. Drain and leave in the sink to cool. Open the first beer of the day. Give Miss Manners the finger, wherever she is.

    6. Add 3 thinly sliced smoked sausages to the onions and garlic over medium heat, tossing the pan

occasionally. Think about the first time you had potato salad with sausage in it, in Germany. Remember how nice Stuttgart was at Christmas, and how long it's been since you spoke to your friends there. Think about other friends you've fallen out of touch with, and wonder how you might reach them. Wonder, too, if you ever ate potato salad in Finland while visiting other friends you haven't talked to in years. Try to remember how long it's been since that restaurant went out of business.

    7. Remove onions, garlic, and sausages from heat. Decide that if you ever open a restaurant, you will also name it after a hooker. Forget that the pan is still hot and pick it up without a sidetowel. Blister.

    8. Chop the potatoes and put them in a big bowl. Open the second beer of the day.

    9. Peel the eggs using the palm-rolling motion chef taught you when you were 14. Remember when you wanted to be a chef. Decide that yes, maybe you would like to open a restaurant someday. Named after a prostitute. Roughly chop the eggs and add them to the bowl, then the cooled onion, garlic, and sausage.

    10. Add a dollop of mayonnaise to the bowl. Wonder who came up with the word "dollop." Add a spoonful of dijon mustard and a few shakes of balsamic vinegar. Add a bit more balsamic vinegar. Mix it all up using the mahogany spoon you carved when you moved to Maine because you wanted to build wooden boats for a living.

  5. go to www.food.com - type in potato salad in the search box - pick a recipe that you like and make it

  6. 3 potatoes

1 hard boiled egg, chopped to bits

    splash of apple vinegar

    1 scoop of mayo

    Dill

Boil the potatoes or if you are lazy, put them in a microwave safe bowl.  Poke holes in the potatoes, cover with a towel or wax paper.  Program it for 9 minutes on high.

Carefully remove the potatoes from the hot water.  Cut them into cubes, allow to cool.  Toss them in the fridge if needed.

When cool, sprinkle some dill (fresh or dry), a splash of the apple vinegar, the chopped egg, and a scoop of mayo. Mix well. Chill in fridge for at least 30 minutes. Serve chilled.

  7. The trick is to get the potatos just right...then add mustard, mayo, relish, and eggs to taste!

This is a good recipe for Creamy Garden Potato Salad

  9. I Peel and boil a small bag of potatoes (depending on how much you need then let it cool. Then I add mayonaise, Italian dressing and chopped up hard boiled egg to taste, it's pretty easy and yummy!

  10. boil some potatoes, depending on how much you wanna make,  let them cool and peel.  Cut them up into small squares, add mayonaise to taste, a spoonful of mustard, or more . . . . relish, a tsp. of celery seed, chopped celery and onion, a little bit of pimento, and poof you've got potato salad.  Everyone makes it their own way to suit their own tastes, and so can you, but thats just pretty much basic potato salad for ya.

  11. This recipe is very easy and delicious:

Boil the potatoes until they don't start peeling of themselves. Then peel the rest, chop them into small peaces and put them in a large, deep plate. Put some olive oil and vinegar dressing, salt and chopped onions. Put that in the fridge to cool and buon appetite!

  12. boil the potatoes and chop it into very small particles sprinkle salt cut out cheese and sprinkle on top of it ur salad is ready

  13. Ingredients:

    4 large baking potatoes.

1/4 white or yellow onion (optional)

    2 large eggs

    1/2 tsp salt

    1/3 cup mayonaise

    4 oz sweet relish

    paprika

Boil the potatoes until they are done but not overcooked

I use the test here where I stick the fork in and it

meets a little resistance but not too much. How long

you boil them depends upon how big they are. You do want

the potatoes done though since no further cooking is

involve. If you overcook them, they don't really hurt

the recipe since the extra potatoe just mixes in with

the creamy portion of the mixture.

Boil the eggs over medium high heat until hard boiled.

Allow the potatoes and eggs to cool. You can run cold water

over them in a strainer to speed up the process.

Peel the potatoes and then slice into chunks. If you aim

for 1 inch by 1 inch chunck you will do well.

Peel and slice the egg into 1/2 inch pieces.

Chop the onion into very small pieces. I made this optional

because you WILL be able to smell the onion on your breath.

Therefore, if a little close contact is planned anytime soon

you probable want to leave the onion out.

Stir all ingredients gently except for the paprika.

After all ingredients are well mixed, pour into a bowl.

Add the parika across the top. Store in the refrigerator

    until ready to serve.

    This stuff is awesome!
