by default your laptop is set to throttle the processor frequency when not in use.  You can adjust your power settings for this through the control panel in your start menu.  Then simply look for power settings.  Many laptops cut the processor speed in half when running on battery so as to save power.   You can view this by right clicking my computer and then selecting properties.  Then look at your cpu both plugged in and on battery.
