How to Stop my Horse from Backing up

I am working with a young saddle bred who has never truely been taught how to ride with the right manors etc under saddle. when i mount him and ask him to move forward he will not do so ( the owner before taught him to do so before he was taught to truely go forward without problem so the horse thinks he is doing something good.). instead he will back up and continue to do so....i have tried everything i have been taught to deal with such a problem & even a crop on the rear won't do the job anymore. if you have any ideas on how to get my horse to move forward without backing up or bucking please share!

  1. Saddlebreds are very foward horses... But also can be sensitive... they are taught to back first because its important to learn so they dont rear when you pull. when they are taught to back they also are taught to move foward by just leg... once they move foward they park out.. if someone were to not know that then they will think that they will be doing something they were infact taught to do... expecialy because hes young. When you get on... let them sit for a second parked out.... get a LOOSE rein or ask someone to head you will out putting any pressure on his bits ask him to move foward then collect... some saddlebreds need alot of leg so try using more leg less rein.. but what i rly suggest is a header... ask some one to head your horse and walk foward a few steps.... its another thing they learn right away is to stand to be mounted and they respect the person that is in frount of him.... do that a couple of times and see if that helps....
