  1. Ok ... I'm going to sound like a real designer now ...

Don't add a hit counter to your site.   They 1) are so 1990 and 2) are just plain useless.

The best thing you can do (I would say) is use a piece of analytics software.  Since you are registered with Blogger, you will have a Google Account.  Great.  Google offers it's own free Analytics software.  In a nut shell, it tells you how many people have been to your site, where they saw your site, if they saw it in Google, Yahoo, etc. and what they were looking for in Google, Yahoo, etc.  It also tells you how long they spent on your site or if they just came and went.  If I remember rightly, it's somewhere in your template settings.  Can't remember where ... check Google's help section.

It's really easy to use, Google likes to make things easy.  And it comes with plenty of help files, so you'll never get lost.  And, since i use it, add me to your contacts list and you've got me as your direct support link.  Or don't, the choice is up to you.

If you're still set on having the hit counter, then you put it in the same place as the Google Analytics code.  Again, Google's help section will tell you exactly where it is.
