I had the main pc downstairs, which is connected to the internet directly by wire. Then i have a router from this pc that sends the internet to another pc upstairs in my bedroom. So at the moment its just a wireless network with one PC receiving. But i bought a new computer (and a new wireless network card thing), but i dont know what to do now. I put the card into the new computer (also upstairs) and I think ive installed it fine. But what now? All i can find is information on how to set up a new connection, but i dont want a new one, i want to connect to the existing one in my house, any ideas?

  1. Hiya!

Just go to network and connections and click connect to the wireless network! If that doesn't work their should be a CD with the wireless router,if that still doesn't work call the manufacturer of the router.

              Hope that helps, Laila

  2. First, your info is probably incorrect.

Usually you connect the ISP's modem feed to the WAN port of a router.  In your case, your router has wired and wireless ability.  At least one pc is connected via wired line to a LAN port of the router.

In your case you have 1 wireless pc connected via wireless link and you want to add another.

I strongly suspect you have properly configured the wireless configuration on the router to include security and MAC address validation.  This was very smart to do.  However, at this time, those security steps are blocking the new pc from hooking up (it perceives the new pc as an outsider and blocks it).

To address this, you must configure the wireless router to accept the new pc.

Using the pc with the wired link, use Internet Explorer (IE) to log onto the router by entering the router IP address in IE.  You will need the user name and password to enter.  Go to the wireless config page and note exactly how the wireless is configured (encryption, preshare key, MAC validation, etc).  I suggest you record this on paper.  Load the MAC address of the wireless port of your new pc into the MAC validation table if MAC address validation is invoked (it should be).  Note your SSID (service sector ID) and if it is turned off, turn it on for now (turn it off after you config the new pc; note how you got to it to turn it on).

Now go to the new pc, config the wireless port for the same encryption, preshare key, etc and search for the ssid.  Once found you should save this config and you are in.

Go back to the router and turn off ssid.

    You should be in business!!
