How to add transition, video, and audio effects in adobe premiere 6.0?

i'm practicing how to edit videos using adobe premiere 6.0 for our project...when i dragged and dropped the effect to the video and previewed it, it didn't show...what will i do???...pls help...and give me some tips in video editting using premiere...THANKS^_^
